Hassan: As many as 52 bonded labourers, who were chained in the night time, were rescued from Savankanahalli village under the Dudda police station limits. Among the rescued, four are children and 17 are women.

According to the Hassan police, these bonded labourers are from Andhra Pradesh, Vijayapura, Hubballi, Haveri, Tumakuru etc. They were apparently chained at night to prevent them from leaving the plantation.

The situation came to light when, on Sunday night, a labourer by the name Munesh escaped from the plantation and informed the police. A team of police personnel headed by SP A N Prakash Gowda then raided the plantation and freed all the labourers.

During the investigation, the rescued labourers informed the police that they were staying in small huts and no facilities were provided. “Even if we fall ill, no one is allowed to go to the hospital,” they informed.
