Shivamogga: In a bizarre incident, people stole the ashes of a charred body and an iron rod from the crematorium at Horabail near Buklapura under Melakuruvalli Gram Panchayat Limits in the Taluk on Wednesday February 1.

The body of a woman from the village was cremated three days ago at the Gangadhareshwara Crematorium in Horabail, near the Town. The next day, the family returned to the cemetery with a tender coconut water as was the custom of pushing the leftover wood. On the third day, the family had come to the crematorium to remove the ashes from the cremation ground but when they saw crematorium, the ashes of the burnt body had disappeared. Surprisingly, the thieves who stole the ashes had kept three bones on one side of the road. The family brought those three bones and did the next ritual.

Shocked to see that there was no ashes of the burnt body in the crematorium, the family informed the villagers about the incident. When the villagers went to the crematorium, they found that what the family had said was true. There is talk from the people of the village that the thieves may have taken away the ashes thinking that gold, silver and coins may have been put during the cremation.
