Shivamogga: Theerthahalli Ellamavasya Grand Fair to begin soon

Shivamogga: Two most important public event in Theerthahalli is the Dasara and Yellamavasya fair. Especially Yellamavasya fair is very famous. Held every year in the last week of December or the first week of January, this famous fair is visited by lakhs of people.

The five-day long fair is publicly held in three phases namely, Theertha Snana, Rathotsava and Theppotsavam. The traditional rituals of the fair, which begin two days before the amavasya, ends with the Theppotsavam or okali ceremony on the fifth day. For the people, the fair will be for three days, but for the programme managers and the priests, the programme will be held for five days.

Those who run the shops come to the fair a week in advance and prepare. Till Makara Sankranti, the fair is open with shops and concluding the fair by pulling a small chariot on the day of Sankranti.

The fair is held in the presence of Sri Rameshwara at Melbaga on the banks of Tunga river in Theerthahalli. People from different places gather near the Tunga River.
