Shivamogga: Two antique sculptures were found during the national highway 206 road excavation on Monday. One of the sculptures was in a damaged state.
Assistant director of archaeological department Shejjeshwar Naik said that these sculptures were installed on the banks of lakes.
“People in the ancient times used to install such carvings on the banks of the lakes with a belief that the same would help in improving the yield of crops, as erotic sculptures symbolise fertility and reproduction. Such sculptures can be found even today on the banks of water bodies in Sorab and Sagar in the district,” he said.
Shejjeshwar Naik informed that current national highway was once a lake of Anandpur.
