Karnataka directed to prioritize safety during school trips

Following the tragic drowning of four school students at Murudeshwar beach, Karnataka’s school education and literacy department has issued strict guidelines to ensure safety during school trips. Schools are instructed to select safer destinations, meticulously plan itineraries, and maintain close supervision of students at all times.

Educational tours, common in November and December, often include visits within and outside the state. In Dakshina Kannada, popular destinations include Mysuru and North Karnataka, while some schools travel to neighboring states. The department emphasized that school heads or tour organizers will be held accountable for any mishaps.

Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI), Venkatesha Subraya Patagara, clarified that Block Education Officers (BEOs) are now responsible for approving school tour requests, including those outside the state. He reiterated the importance of ensuring safety measures are in place.

Most schools in the district hire private buses for transportation due to lower costs. However, incidents like the 2017 fatal accident near Uppinangady underscore the need for strict safety protocols.

The department dismissed rumors about banning school tours, calling circulating social media messages false. Instead, it encouraged adherence to guidelines to make trips safer and more secure for students.
