Mangaluru Police Urge Caution Amid Rising Road Deaths
Mangaluru: Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has urged citizens—particularly youngsters and their guardians—to drive responsibly, following a worrying surge in fatal road mishaps within the city.
In a public appeal issued on Wednesday, he disclosed that 75 lives have been lost in traffic collisions within city boundaries this year alone, with 70 of those traced back to reckless and careless driving.
He noted with concern that a majority of the deceased were individuals below the age of 30, many not even 25. “This trend is deeply troubling,” he emphasized.
He called upon parents to be more vigilant when allowing young individuals to operate vehicles. “Ensure they avoid rash driving. Once they attempt to flee at high speed, even law enforcement may not be able to intervene—often ending in tragedy,” he warned.
Referring to two recent fatalities involving youths driving under the influence, Reddy stated that four such deaths have occurred in 2024 so far. “Driving drunk is a dangerous choice. Always obey traffic rules—go slow, follow signals, and return home safe,” he advised.
He stressed the ripple effect of road deaths on families, especially when the victim is the main income source. “Start early, if needed, but never compromise safety. Every life matters,” he urged.
Touching on a separate issue, Reddy criticized the rise of self-styled social media ‘investigators’ interfering in criminal cases. “Police work is based on verified evidence. Sharing baseless claims or pressuring decisions online is illegal,” he said.
