“MP Urges Regional Hospital Status for Wenlock in Mangaluru”
Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta has urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to grant Regional Hospital status to Wenlock District Hospital, Mangaluru. In a letter to the CM, he emphasized that upgrading Wenlock would boost funding and infrastructure, benefiting patients from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and 7-8 neighboring districts. However, staff shortages remain a key challenge, requiring state support for the hospital’s overall development.
Praising the medical team led by Dr. Suresh Pai, Capt. Chowta highlighted their life-saving surgery on a migrant worker’s child from Madikeri, which demonstrated the hospital’s high-quality care and skilled expertise.
Wenlock is already undergoing upgrades worth over ₹90 crore, including funds from MRPL and CSR initiatives. Recently, a ₹60 crore super specialty hospital was inaugurated under the Smart City project. Additionally, ₹25.11 crore from the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PMABHIM) was allocated, with ₹24 crore for a Critical Care Unit and ₹1.11 crore for a District Integrated Public Health Lab (IPHL). Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally laid the foundation for these projects.
Once operational, these new facilities will enhance Wenlock’s ability to offer advanced medical treatment to a larger population.
