Mangaluru: A 47-year-old woman, Rahmat H Rashid, tragically lost her life when a tanker lorry ran over her after a scooter accident near Chembugudde, Thokkottu, within the Ullal police station limits on Saturday. Rahmat was riding pillion with Abdul Rashid G, who was en route from Yenepoya Hospital towards Bajpe Airport. As the scooter skidded on a poor stretch of road, Rahmat fell, and a tanker following close behind ran over her. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared her dead upon arrival.
The accident has sparked public outcry, with the DYFI Ullal Taluk Committee organizing a protest on Saturday night against the poor road conditions they hold responsible for the fatal accident. Committee president Nithin Kuthar criticized MLA and Legislative Assembly Speaker UT Khader, alleging neglect of the dangerous, toll-free road. He demanded urgent repairs and warned that if action isn’t taken within a week, protestors would march to the MLA’s office with black flags.
Former DYFI State President Sunil Kumar Bajal also expressed anger over the hazardous conditions in Thokkottu market, where potholes endanger pedestrians and motorists alike. Following the protest, temporary repairs to the road stretch in Chembugudde were implemented on Sunday.
