Private Schools in Dakshina Kannada Introduce On-Campus Meal Services for Students
Mangaluru – A growing trend in Dakshina Kannada sees private schools offering paid breakfast and lunch services directly on campus, catering to the needs of both students and their parents. This initiative addresses the challenge of parents packing lunch boxes daily and ensures students have access to warm, nutritious meals.
What began as a trial in a few schools has expanded across the region, providing a popular and convenient solution. Schools often offer students a choice between vegetarian and non-vegetarian meal options. For instance, St Mary’s English Higher Primary School in Falnir initially hesitated to provide lunch but later responded to parental requests. After polling the parents, the school introduced a catering service two years ago, which continues to thrive.
Similarly, Mount Carmel Central School in Maryhill also offers this service, and while it is optional, many parents find it beneficial. Students can either bring their own tiffins or take part in the on-campus meal program.
The Bharat Academy’s principal, Reshma Nayak Sujir, explained that their school offers daily-changing vegetarian meals, encouraging students to minimize food wastage with the help of a dedicated group of “green warriors.” Sameer Puranik, director of Sharada Group of Institutions in Kodialbail, highlighted how the service encourages students to eat what’s offered without fuss, fostering a healthy eating environment and ensuring that meals are served hot.
Parents have welcomed the initiative, appreciating the convenience and the assurance that their children receive wholesome, freshly prepared meals during school hours.
