Mysuru: A 16-year-old girl left her parental home in the dead of the night to evade child marriage after her own parents issued her death threats in Koodlapura village of Nanjangud taluk.

Mahadeva Shetty and Mangalamma couple of Koodlapura village made all arrangements to get their daughter married to a close relative within the family. The girl did not show any inclination to get married and refused the proposal. Angered by her decision, parents threatened to kill her.

Sensing more trouble, the girl escaped from her house in the cover of darkness and managed to reach the temple premises at Nanjangud in a private vehicle. A devotee noticing her plight took her to the nearest women’s counselling centre.

Girl explained the trauma she underwent and sought security from the staff at the centre. Officials at the centre registered a case and have assured the girl of suitable action after talking to her parents.
