Mysuru: In what can be described as one of the biggest seizures of banned plastic, the officials of Mysuru City Corporation sized 3200kg of banned plastics here on Monday.

There has been a ban on the use of plastic bags and other plastic products since March this year across the State.

Despite conducting raids and seizing banned plastics products, some of the shops wereusing plastic bags. Acting on tip-off, a team of corporation officials led by corporation commissioner Jagadeesh and health officer Dr Ramachandra seized nearly 3000kg of banned plastic bags at Senthil Kumar Textiles near Agrahara circle.

The textile owners purchased those bags thinking they are jute bags after paying Rs 15 each, but the corporation authorities after verifying it scientifically realised that there was plastic content in it. Hence, they seized all the 3000 bags which were in the shop and fined them Rs 10,000. The corporation officials also warned the proprietor that criminal case will be filed if found using plastic again. On the same road, the officials also seized another 200kg of plastic bags at Kamadhenu showroom.
Dr Ramachandra, health officer of corporation who too was part of the raid said, “It’s one of the highest seizures in the recent past. From just two shops we managed to seize 3200kgs of plastics. In days to come, the drive will be intensified and criminal case will be filed against those found repeatedly using banned plastics”.

Use of plastics bags thinner than 40 microns was banned in March earlier this year. The government went a step further and decided to ban all types of plastic carry bags irrespective of their thickness. Shopkeepers, vendors, wholesalers, retailers, traders and hawkers have been told not to use carry bags, banners and buntings.

Rudresh, Assistant Commissioner, MCC and Yadav, Environment Engineer were a part of the team which took raided various shops.
