Mysuru: After a protest at University of Mysore entrance premise where an alumna of the university was holding the controversial ‘Free Kashmir’ placard for which Jayalakshmipuram Police Station also booked sedition case against her, University of Mysore has come forward to tighten its security by installing nearly 720 CCTV cameras across its campus. Not only the students but also faculties and researchers have welcomed the move.

It can be brought to light that non-functioning of four CCTV Cameras which were installed at the main entrance of University campus were exposed after protest incident. The four cameras were not found functioning for the past more than one and a half years. After seeing the plight of CCTV cameras at the campus, Hemantha Kumar, Vice-Chancellor of UOM for the security and safety of students and staff decided to come out with high-quality CCTV cameras across University campus. The work will commence at the earliest and expected to be completed by March next month. Students also want CCTV cameras installed at all the classrooms.

Hemantha Kumar told Newskarnataka“To increase security in the university campus, we have decided to come out with centralized surveillance which will be set up at the Computer Science department. These cameras will really help us to keep track of the movement of everybody. The work will be started in a few days’ time and expected to be completed by March”.

INTELLIGENT VIDEO SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM:“Centralised monitoring solution with total 720 cameras are getting installed across campus which covers department corridors, campus roads, Entrance and exit gates with vehicle number plates capturing options”added Hemanta Kumar.

Pulikeshi Y Shetteppanavar, Deputy Director of Department of Physical Education and Sports, University of Mysore said “If it is set up, it will be really very good. If there are any illegal activities, fight or clash among students or for that matter any nuisance in the campus it can be easily captured in these cameras. Without security, we can identify the people who are involved in a fight or any illegal activities”.

TN Vinay Kumar, who is pursuing final year Post Graduation in Public Administration welcoming the initiative, said “Really it’s a very good initiative on part of university authorities. These cameras will really help in keep tab on any illegal activities it may be mobile or chain snatching, theft, any attack on students and any illegal activities on the campus. The foremost important is, just by installing these cameras will not serve the purpose but it should be maintained well”.
