AIISH celebrates golden jubilee; Govt urged to give them university status

Mysuru: All India Institute for Speech and Hearing (AIISH), Mysuru, one of India’s premier institutions, deserves a university status and national importance for its excellence in the field of effective communication, opined educationalists.

As AIISH celebrated its golden jubilee at in its premises on Sunday, Dr P Sathischandra, Director of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Dr H A Ranganath, former director of NAAC and Ramachandra Bhat, Vice-Chancellor of Swami Vivekananda Yoga Research Foundation, Bengaluru expressed their views on AIISH.

Speaking on the occasion, Sathischandra said that AIISH has taken a leap to the genetic level which is a very important level. “These are the days where speech, hearing and communication skills are very much necessary and thus they should be developed”, he added.

“The institute is playing a huge role in promoting communication skills. The government needs to think of how it can supplement AIISH, as it is serving across the country. The institution is a mini-university and it must get university status”, he said. Quoting former president of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam he said “You must dream high and don’t stay there, try to get the international importance for the institute”.

Stressing on importance of innovations, he said that innovations are very much needed for a country like India where technology are very high. “We need to innovate and produce technologies so that every common man can utilize them,” he called upon students to conduct more research. Increasing the number of PhD students is the need of an hour, he added.

Earlier, Ranganath, citing students of the institution from different parts of the country, said that the institution is mini India and it deserves University status. The institution is unique with its features. He asked AIISH for fruitful collaboration with other institutions to be a global player.

He pointed out that Mysuru is wonderful place for education as center-run institutions, including Central Food Technological Institute (CFTRI), Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL) are located in Mysuru.

AIISH was established on August 9, 1965, for human resource development, research, clinical services, and public education in the field of communication disorders.

During the golden jubilee celebrations, three new-born hearing screening centers at parts of the country have been made public.

The centers at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry; Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences at Ranchi (Jharkhand) and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College and Hospital, Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh were declared public.

The objective of the centers is to screen all the babies in the hospitals for speech, language and hearing disorders and identify babies at risk for communication disorders as early as possible and rehabilitate them, if required. Screening of newborns is essential to identify and rehabilitate young babies with communication disorders, as early as possible. The programme will be extended to other parts of the country soon. In previous year, around 26,000 newborn babies were undergone checkup for communication disorder at AIISH. Of that 19% were detected with one or the other communication disorder, said authorities.

In addition, the institute provides tele-rehabilitation and tele-diagnosis services at its three mentoring institutes, as RIMS, Imphal, JIPMER, Puducherry, NSBMC Jabalpur for BASLP programme. The institute has four outreach centres to extend its services to the masses at Akkihebbalu, Hullahalli, Gumballi and Sagar Taluk in Karnataka.

Apart from this, the Golden Jubilee video, online system for hearing screening research publications, Clinical tests, tools were released on the occasion.

PhD awardees, meritorious students, retired employees and ‘AIISHian of the year’ awards were given away during the programme.
