Mysuru: For the betterment of special children, the Government of India has said that all the Kendriya Vidyalaya School should have one special educator said M Pushpavathi, Director of All India Institute of Speech and Hearing.

Delivering presidential address during a two-day national seminar on ‘Paradigm Shift in Early Childhood Education for Children with Communication Disorders’ organized by Department of Special Education of AIISH at its seminar hall here on Monday she said “Once if these children get the facility of special educators, they can provide them better coaching method. Special educators will teach special children in simple method. In western countries, each and every school will have a speech pathologist, special educators, physiotherapist and application therapists”.

“Early childhood is a crucial phase of growth and development. Knowledge acquired during early childhood can affect the entire course of an individual’s life. Education during this period is fundamental to the development of a child and can significantly shape the later years of an individual’s life. He or she may not understand or make the sounds of speech. The child may also struggle with word choice, word order, or sentence structure. For children with communication disorders, it is a vital time to ensure access to interventions that can help them to reach their full potential. The government of India has put in place an act for the disabled to make sure the disabled also form an important part of nation-building. When we are making policy including Person With Disabilities Act 1995 which envisages free school up to 18 years, what is the condition of the school? When some policy is implemented we should also make sure those infrastructures are also there” added Pushpavathi. She also mentioned that according to the 2010 census, 18 percent of the people have a hearing problem in India and the paradigm shift that we require right now is to bring children from machine to human interaction.
