Chamarajanagara: All the districts of the State are equipped with full-fledged stadiums in their respective district headquarters. But Chamarajanagara, one of the backward border districts of our State is sans district stadium.

There is a long story about stadium which reflects the apathy of officials as well as elected representatives. Any government construction work below Rs. 10 crore would be complete in 2 – 3 or maximum 5 years but the construction of the Chamarajanagara stadium, which began 21 years ago to facilitate various sports like cricket, hockey, basketball, swimming, kabaddi, and football among others is still incomplete. Thanks to the utter negligence of officials of Sports and Youth Service Department. The State Government spent crores of rupees for the construction but it has become dilapidated even before the inauguration of the stadium.

It is disgraceful that many District In-Charge Ministers, and legislators have changed in two decades but no one has tried to complete the stadium. It was during the tenure of Vatal Nagaraj, an independent MLA in 1999, the State District Administration allotted 25 acres of land for the construction of stadium and three acres for private bus stand. The allotted land belongs to the lake of the town. According to the plan, the officials have to build an international quality stadium for all sports including hockey, cricket, basketball, swimming pool, kabaddi, volleyball and football. But even 21 years after the start of the stadium work it is still incomplete. Though few construction work of facilities for indoor games is complete, the other works are still pending. The audience gallery is still under construction and has already in a dilapidated state.

The Government spent more than Rs. 15 Crore during last two decades but the completion requires more money. The Union Government had initially sanctioned Rs. 3.20 Crore, and further sanctioned Rs. 5.50 Crore for construction of synthetic athletic track. The athletic track is complete but owing to poor maintainence the track is on the verge of destruction. Though swimming pool was included in the plan, the authorities are yet to construct it. Many sports equipment is rusting. Though there is a toilet lack of water connection has made it useless. The stadium has no drinking water facility so far. The officers, District In-Charge Minister, and MLAs promptly visit the stadium only during celebration of national festivals for hoisting the flag.

Speaking to NewsKarnataka, the stadium committee member, and Mysuru University former cricket player V. Srinivas Prasad has alleged that rampant corruption has taken place in the construction of the stadium. The contractor and officials concerned are part of corruption. He urged the authorities to black list the contractor and complete the remaining work soon.
