Chamarajanagara: A postgraduate student in Mysore University has secured 14 gold medals. The student who hails from poor family working as mason and painter as part time employment has achieved this feat.
The student P. Mahadevaswamy is the son of Puttabasavaiah and Nagamma, natives of Nagavalli Village in Chamarajanagara Taluk. Swamy is a student of Master of Kannada at Dr. B. R. Ambedkar postgraduation
centre in Chamarajanagara. Swamy lost his father two decades ago, while his mother Nagamma and brothers raised him by working as labourers. But the poverty did not prevent Swamy in excelling in education.
This is not the first time he has achieved gold. While studying Bachelor of Education at Bhagavan Buddha BEd college at Malavalli in Mandya District he won two gold medals from Mysore University itself.
Swamy has secured 1963 marks in 4 semesters of MA in Kannada out of total 2200 marks. Swamy is working as a mason and painter during holidays and weekends to support his education.
Speaking to NewsKarnataka, PG Centre Kannada professor Dr. P. Mahesh Babu said that the PG Centre opened in the year 2015-16. Till today 45 gold medals have been won by students in this backward area. Swamy alone has secured 14 gold medals for the first time, which is also a record, he said and added that he is really proud of him.
Swamy said that he has been a hardworker since childhood which life itself has taught taugt him. He said he wants to become a public servant by appearing for UPSC and KPSC examinations. He expects free IAS coaching centres to help him achieve his goal.
PG Centre Director Professor R. Mahesh said that rural students are getting more number of gold medals in recent times. Last year Kannada MA student Madalambika had secured 10 gold medals and JSS Math seer Sri Shivaratri Deshikendra Swamiji provided her employment in the math-run institution, he added.
The university convocation will be held on March 22 next where Swamy would receive his medals.
