Chamarajanagara: The Mines and Geology Department has cancelled licensed of eight stone quarry licenses in Madahalli area in the District.

The action was taken following Madahalli stone quarry tragedy on March 5 wherein three quarry workers were killed and five injured after huge stone slided on them while working.

After the tragedy the District Minister V. Somanna ordered to form a team of officers under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner  Charulatha Somal to inspect all the stone quarries in the District.

The team visited all the quarries to check whether it was legal or illegal. The Mines and Geology Deputy Director K. M. Nanjunda Swamy said that the Government has cancelled licensed of eight quarries including that of the Madahalli quarry where tragedy took place.

The stone quarry owners have urged the Government to allow legally operating quarries as otherwise construction activities would be paralysed, and people would face hardships to construct houses.
