Chamarajanagara: The road leading to the famous pilgrimage centre of the region Male Mahadeshwara Hills, filled with potholes followed by incessant rains in the area since a month.

Most of the potholes were seen on the 18-km-stretch from Talabetta to the Mahadeswara Hills in the Hanoor Taluk of the District. The condition of the road is pathetic as two-wheelers have been facing inconvenience in traversing avoiding potholes, and many a times having a fall.

Everyday thousands of devotees visit Male Mahadeshwara Temple, which is a famous pilgrimage of South India. The devotees even come from faraway places like Ooty, and Chennai. The number of visitors from the other districts and states are high. Thus, the traffic on this road is dense too. Traffic on the twisty path was difficult before, and now the potholes are making it more difficult for the devotees to travel. This is not only a road connecting to temple but also an inter-state road connecting Tamil Nadu Via Palar hence hundreds of goods vehicles too ply on this road daily. The road has not seen proper development since years. The PWD officers have been filling just the potholes whenever people complaint.

This road passes through the Male Mahadeswara Wildlife Sanctuary. Being an environmentally sensitive area, there are restrictions on development too. However, the present road is quite wide at some points and there is no problem to repair or develop the road. However, the riders complain that road repair works have not been qualitative.

Being a hilly area, rainfall also is high but there is no proper storm water drain. The rain water flowing on the road is causing damage to the road. Drivers, and pilgrims who visit the temple say that the contractors have not asphalted properly. The negligent attitude of the authorities in repairing the road has faced severe criticism from the devotees.

Mahadevaswamy, a devotee from Kanakapura says that if Public Work Department authorities maintain quality in road works the work will last for at least a decade.

Speaking to News Karnataka, Male Mahadeshwara Hills PWD Assistant Executive Engineer Satish Chandra said that the road has damaged badly due to continuous rain. He said that the department has already sent a proposal to reconstruct the stretch to chief engineers, Bengaluru. The works would begin soon after getting the approval and sanction from higher authorities, he added.
