Chamarajanagara: The residents in Kuderu village in Yelandur taluk are opposing the setting up of solid waste management unit by Yelandur town panchayat.

Two years back the Chamarajanagara District administration has sanctioned 7.20 acres of land in survey number 89 in Moodala Agrahara village. But the villagers strongly opposed the unit citing environment will be unclean. The villagers say that the land identified for setting up of unit is in centre of Moodala Agrahara, Badagala Mole and Tenkala Mole villages.

The villagers have agricultural lands just 100 meters away from the proposed land for a unit. Nanjanagudu-Kavalande main road is also just 200 meters away. The unit is just a kilometre away from Kuderu Government Pre-University College and primary School and Handijogi Colony.

The villagers also expressed concern that the proposed site is a good water source. The Addahalla rivulet passes through the land, and if the town panchayat constructs the plant the groundwater resource would dry up. Villager Rajendra Swamy said that many villagers are into producing ropes from cement bags. They have been washing cement bags constructing mud revetment to Addahole. Further, he added that the villagers who are dependent on producing rope for livelihood will suffer if the Addahole dries or pollutes after the construction of the solid waste management unit.

Another villager Basappa said the waste plant would cause stink, and also mosquito menace. The proposed unit would definitely destroy the atmosphere, he added. He said hundreds of houses surround the proposed spot. The plying of vehicles, and the stink would pose threat to the health of the villagers. He said villagers are united and would take up agitation if the government does not withdraw the unit from the village.

Yelandur town panchayat chief officer Nagarathna said that the land was sanctioned by the District Administration as per law. If villagers object we will bring it to the notice of the District Administration, she added.
