Chamarajanagara: The Halehundi village in the Kelasuru Gram Panchayat of the district’s Gundlupet Taluk has been facing a lack of basic infrastructure. The district, which is one of the state’s most backward, shares a border with Tamil Nadu.

This year’s excessive rainfall has resulted in potholes in the district’s roads. The National Highway connecting Gundlupet to Erode also facing the same problem. Thousands of vehicles ply across this road daily, but poor maintenance has resulted in potholes.

The condition of rural areas is even worse. The Halehundi village has no proper road and even drainage. Despite many requests to the Gram Panchayat authorities, no action has been made to address drainage issues.

Another connecting road to the village is filled with potholes. The villagers are unable to walk on the path as it has been covered with bushes. Few villagers encroached upon the road and fenced it. The authorities did not take any action against encroachers despite complaints. According to the villagers, it has turned into hell during the rainy season.

Speaking to NewsKarnataka on Sunday January 2, Halehundi villager Venkatappa said that the villagers are experiencing a shortage of drinking water during the summer, in addition to drainage and road issues. The Gram Panchayat authorities did not install a pipeline for the Jal Jeevan mission’s drinking water project.

When contacted Kelasur Gram Panchayat President Kaggala Madappa said that under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS) an action plan was created for road and drainage. But the State Government authorities did not release grants to take up works under MNREGS. He said the work would begin soon after releasing funds.

The villagers complained to Gundlupet Taluk Panchayat Executive Officer to solve the problems of the village and also warned of severe protest if they do not solve it within one month.
