Mysuru: A crocodile has been found dead at sewage farm in Vidyapuram leading to panic among the residents in the area.

The Forest Department authorities are clueless about the crocodile but locals say they had seen such reptiles in a drain at Gopura Park, off Nanjangud Road, in the recent past.

The carcass of the crocodile was found floating on sewage, and a tyre was found around its belly. Deputy Conservator of Forests Karikalan said, “Finding a crocodile within a city like Mysuru is uncommon. But some locals maintain they are crocodiles, especially in the drain at Gopura Park.” The foresters said the reptile has died due to natural causes and there are no external injuries.

The adult crocodile was found lying at one corner of the farm spread over 100 acres in the city’s south eastern parts where the Mysuru City Corporation has set up the solid waste management plant. The prime property is used to grow ground grass which is collected by cattle rearers to feed the cattle.

Late on Wednesday evening, when the cowherds were cutting the grass, they noticed the croc and panicked. However, the reptile was not moving when they mustered courage and went near it when it was found dead. The carcass was pulled out by them with the help of localities and area corporator Sunil Kumar. They altered the forest department, who rushed to the spot. They conducted the post mortem to ascertain the cause.

The cow herders have told the authorities that they have noticed at least two more crocodiles at the area.

DCF V Karikalan said the crocodile has died due to natural cause. We suspect that it was washed to the Sewage Farm during rainy season and has stayed there given that it extends security to it. The undergrowth coupled with aquatic feed has helped it stay back at the site, he explained. The reptile change the habitat only if they are exposed and don’t find the feed, he said.

He said the localities have informed that there are crocodiles at the area but said they are not planning to nab them. Generally they avoid the human presence and don’t attack like how it happened at Kukkarahalli lake. “We’ll capture them if they pose danger to the public,” he told

The cow herders said they wade through knee deep water to cut grass for the cattle exposing themselves to the lurking danger.

A forester said crocodiles are sighted at vacant land near Dasara Exhibition grounds and its surrounding but there have been no case of attack on humans. There are no case of attack on cowherds at the Sewage Farm either, he stated.
