Mysuru: The deck is cleared for constructing Vishnuvardhan Memorial on the five-acre land near Haalaalu Village close to Mysuru – HD Kote road. Though the farmers were angry with the government’s initiative at the proposed site, the district administration led by Deputy Commissioner D Randeep and other officers concerned including Additional Deputy Commissioner Venkatesh managed to convince the farmers and called upon them to produce relevant documents to prove the place belonged to them.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will be laying the foundation stone for the proposed memorial on December 6. As part of the preparation for the proposed foundation laying function D Randeep and other officers visited the place. When officials visited the spot, the local farmers spoke to them and staked claim over the property. The DC showed them the document indicating the five acre land was Kharab land belonging to the government. He also assured the farmers that if they produced relevant documents to prove their ownership on the land, the government was ready to provide alternate land.
D Randeep said, “Despite offering an amicable solution, some farmers threatened to commit suicide”.
According to farmers, they have been cultivating in the land for many years, which is their only source of livelihood. The land was granted after Dr Bharathi Vishnuvardhan, wife of Vishnuvardhan, requested the government to shift the memorial from Bengaluru to Mysuru, which is the birth place of the late actor Dr Vishnuvardhan.
