Mysuru: Heggadadevana Kote MLA Chikkamadhu flouted all rules and entered the Bandipur forest reserve with lot of people to take part in an annual religious fair in Hadiyal forest range on November 27.During ‘Karthika Maasa’ (Month of Karthika as per Hindu calender), Shri Mahadeshwara Swamy fair is held during November 27 -30 every year in Yadiyala forest range. Due to increased traffic and smoke pollution from cooking, forest department had imposed restrictions and banned entry of all vehicles during the fair this year. After witnessing the fair gaining commercial prominence, the department had instructed devotees to travel in the forest department vehicles to take part in the rituals and had placed barricades at entry points to prevent unlawful entry.

However, HD Kote MLA Chikkamadhu and hundreds of his followers had other ideas. They threw the barricades and entered the tiger reserve, flouting all forest department guidelines. Director at the Bandipur forest reserve, Keeralal has already complained to his higher-ups about the incident.

Justifying his action, MLA Chikkamadhu said, forest department cannot impose restrictions all of a sudden and stop the annual fair being celebrated over many years. The decision to organize the fair was done after consulting the state Chief Minister who instructed the officials accordingly, and further added, ”Precautions can be taken next time”.

Case not filed against violation

The forest rules clearly states that none are permitted to enter the Bandipur tiger reserve after 5.30 pm. Hence, the officials feel the unilateral decision taken by the MLA to enter the reserve with hundreds of followers is in violation of the forest act.

Forest department officials visited the spot to assess the situation to decide the future course of action on Tuesday morning, November 29.
