Mysuru: Passengers travelling from Mysuru Railway Station can heave a sigh of relief. Two escalators connecting platform 1 and 6 were inaugurated by Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu through video link from Goa on Saturday.

Mysuru is one of the important “A” category stations of Indian Railways. At present, there are six platforms at Mysuru Railway station, which are connected by foot over bridge for movement of passengers from one platform to another platform. The two escalators are based on censor technology, as soon as the commuters arrive, the doors will start opening and as soon as they board it will start moving upwards automatically. The escalators would be stationery when there are no users, which are designed to enable railways to save a lot of energy. Its length is 6.3 meters and width is 1meter. The project has cost the state Rs.2.69 Crore. The escalators will be beneficial especially for senior citizens, women and disabled people who travel with their luggage.

As a part of modernising the railway system, Union Minister for Railways has announced “Installation of Escalators” in all important A1 and A category stations for smooth movement of passengers from one platform to another. This work was sanctioned during the year 2014-15 at 179 stations including that of Mysuru.

Subway and Lifts: The work on a subway work which will connect platform number 1 and 6 and the two lifts near platform number 4 and 5 will be completed by December end. Everyday nearly 25,000 to 30,000 people travel from Mysuru and the number swells during weekends, Dasara and other festival seasons.
