Mysuru: With scarcity of petroleum, increase in the cost of LPG is inevitable and waste management is another burning issue of the modern world. A common solution to tackle both the problems seems to be the kitchen waste biogas plant. Keeping this in mind, on the directions from Deputy Commissioner D Randeep, the city based National Institute of Engineering–Centre for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technologies (NIE-CREST) has set up a biogas plant at the DC’s residence Jalasannidhi. With this biogas plant, deputy commissioner’s residence will be saving almost 40 percent of LPG.

S Shamsundar, Head of NIE-CREST, briefing about the Kitchen Biogas Plant said, “Technical expertise is not required for its operation. Around 1 to 5 kg of kitchen waste can be put into the tank fitted with a tight lid and garbage undergoes multistage digestion with the cascade digester. Using the biomethanation technology, biogas is generated which can be utilised for cooking purposes. Everyday, biogas can be used for one to one and half hour in kitchen.”

“Though waste is a problem for many, for engineers it is energy. Kitchen Waste Biogas Plant is a system which transforms the waste from kitchen to biogas and in the process, the manure is formed as a byproduct. Biogas can be utilised for cooking and slurry can be used for gardening. It involves the principle of anaerobic digestion through which the complex organic matter is broken down into simple molecules. Kitchen wastes like rice starch, washed water of rice, used tea or coffee powder, waste atta, left out rice, sambar, over ripened fruits, vegetable wastes, waste edible oil and other cooked wastes from kitchen are handy. Total returns per day through biogas plant and manure comes to around Rs 27 and per month it will be around Rs 800 per year. The cost of mild steel plant comes to around Rs 38,000”, added Shamsundar. He also mentioned that kitchen biogas plant could also be fitted on the roof top and not only in houses but also in hostels and restaurants where kitchen wastes are generated in large numbers.

Deputy Commissioner D Randeep said, “The kitchen waste, instead of sending it to the corporation, we are converting it into clean fuel through Kitchen Waste Biogas Plant which is also cheaper, safer and less polluting than the LPG. It is not only about keeping the environment clean but also the atmosphere per se. So it is a very good alternative. Even for hot water, I am using solar. With LPG rate going to increase further this will be the best alternative. I am paying personally for the plant which costs Rs 36,000. After seeing the pros and cons of this biogas plant, I will think of implementing it in the hostels”. Every month, a minimum of two LPG cylinders are used at DC’s residence. With this biogas, they will be saving a minimum of 40 percent of LPG. After inaugurating the kitchen waste biogas plant, tea was prepared by using the same.

Benefit of kitchen waste biogas plant:

-A very convenient way to utilise biodegradable waste.

-Clean, hygienic and pollution free environment.

-Free from offensive odour or smell.

-No flies, mosquitoes or rats and rodents problem.

-Saving on transportation of waste.

-Smoke free fuel can be used for cooking and in boilers for electricity generation.

-Compact size.

-Organic manure as a byproduct.
