Kodagu: This is a story about the pathetic condition of a tribal family living in the forest in Somwarpet Taluk in the district.

Vinu Krishna and Anitha have been residing in Sulebavi tribal haadi (colony) for many years. The colony has just 20 houses situated in Yedavanadu Reserve Forest. The couple has three daughters.

Their specially-abled daughter is Chaitra (8) was not born disabled. She was normal till the age of one. One day lightning struck Chaitra amid heavy rains while playing in front of the house. After that, the left side of the child’s body was affected. She could not drink, eat, and walk without the help of others.

Speaking to News Karnataka, Vinu Krishna said that soon after the incident he took the child to Madikeri and Somwarpet hospitals for treatment. Despite spending thousands of rupees on various check-ups and treatment yet the child’s condition did not improve.

He said that they both work in coffee estates for livelihood but one person should be at home to look after the disabled child. He claimed that the authorities nor the officers helped them. The house in which the family staying is dilapidated and leaks during rains. The doors and windows of the house are eaten by termites.

Owing to disability the child could not get education. Child’s mother said that doctors have advised them to take the child to multi-speciality hospitals in Mangaluru and Bengaluru for treatment but they are financially weak. “We have to feed the other two children also. She said the local Aigoor gram panchayat installed a solar lamp in the colony which has not been working for two years. The Kushalanagara Rotary Club has donated a wheelchair to the child a year ago. Other than this we could not get anything from the government and others.”

When contacted Somwarpet Social Welfare Department Assistant Director N. Chandrappa said that the issue came to his notice last week. He said he has instructed the family to apply for disability allowance and instructed the Women and Children Welfare Department to provide an allowance soon. He said all the facilities will be provided to the family by the government at the earliest.
