Do not twist facts, let’s discuss: Ex-MP Vishwanath on Tipu Jayanthi

Madikeri: Former MP H Vishwanath opined that instead of blindly criticising Tipu Sultan, there should be a discussion to understand the truth.

Speaking to media persons, he said, “Tipu Jayanthi is a government-aided programme and will be organised by the district organisation. If anyone is not interested to participate let them be quiet. In a democratic country, there is provision to hold any celebration. No one should indulge in spreading lies or wrong facts among people and create outrage. Tipu Jayanthi is not being celebrated based on any caste, creed or community but it is a government-aided programme”, he clarified.

“There are statements made by some leaders that Kodavas were massacred and converted. They need to find out what was the population in Kodagu 250 years ago and in that what was the number of Kodavas. Is there a proof for these allegations? To know the truth, there should be a discussion. Those who are opposing the celebration themselves can hold a discussion and invite historians for it,” he said.

“There is an opportunity for all to discuss and express opinions in a democratic country. Instead of knowing the truth, no one should act as if they have studied the whole history and create confusion among people. By twisting historical facts and celebrating Tipu Jayanthi, Congress will not achieve anything”, Vishwanath added.

Reacting to reports about former minister V Srinivas Prasad joining BJP, he lamented, “I am pained by his decision. He is my friend and I had urged him not to resign but he did not listen to me. He is joining a communal party at the end of his political career and it is sad”.

Responding to social activist Hiremath’s land denotification allegations against former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, Vishwanath said, “People are losing faith in all the political parties due to a rise in corruption. This is not a good sign”.
