Madikeri: Alleging that the ex-servicemen are being neglected by the state government, the District Ex-Servicemen’s Association has urged the District Administration to make sure that their pleas are heard and fulfilled, failing which a massive protest rally would be organised by them.

Addressing a news conference Association President Major General B A Karyappa said that the district administration must hold meeting at least once in three months to lend an ear to the grievances of the retired soldiers and army men.

“The former soldiers and army men are disrespected in this state. When compared to other states, the ex-servicemen in Karnataka are not receiving any benefit and care from the Government. There are about 10,000 to 15,000 ex-servicemen and their dependents in the district alone. Most of the ex-servicemen are those who sacrificed 15 to 40 years of their life for the sake of the country. But, our services are being disrespected by the government,” he said adding that when the ex-servicemen demanded land for themselves, the government said only those who pay the cost for the land would be allotted land.

He also said that even 20 cents of land required to establish a building for the ex-servicemen too was denied by the government. “In states like Kerala, a former soldier is called by the government and given land and other benefits as mark of respect,” he opined adding that if the government cannot provide reservation to children of the former soldiers and the Kodavas then it is better to shift the Sainik School out of Kodagu.

He demanded 10 per cent reservation each for children of former soldiers as well as Kodavas.
