Somwarpet: Miscreants entered Jamia Masjid in Aigoor of Somwarpet and burnt down Holy Quran. The incident that may have occurred last week, came to light on Sunday when Abdul Rahiman, a local came to the Mosque to offer prayers.

The police registered a complaint based on the petition given by Hosathota Jamaath president Saidu Haaji and are carrying out further investigations.

It is said that the said Masjid, which becomes a hot spot of activities only during festivities, otherwise remains almost abandoned with very few turning up for prayers on daily basis and the miscreants who had learnt about this gained entry into the mosque opening the roof tiles and burnt the Holy Quran.

Somwarpet circle inspector Parashivamurthy, Madikeri circle inspector Karim Rahutar, Station Inspector Shivanna and others visited the Masjid to take stock of the situation.

Meanwhile, Saidu Haji has set a deadline of one week for the police to nab the miscreants. The locals said that during Ramzaan celebrations too they had witnessed some miscreants pelting stones at vehicles with the intention of disturbing peace. But, no action was taken by the police. They cited increase in the number of such activities in the recent past and felt miscreants might have burnt the Koran on Tipu Jayathi-November 10 to vent out their anger and frustration.
