Maddur (Mandya): A mass cremation was accorded to the 14 persons who had lost their life in a terrifying road mishap at Thoreshettahalli in Mandya on Sunday late night. Over 90 people were plying in a mini lorry to a nearby village to take part in a wedding when the driver rammed the vehicle into a tree on the highway killing 14 and leaving 19 others severely injured.

It is now learnt that a mini lorry that could accommodate only 40 persons was overcrowded with nearly 90 persons juggling their way into the vehicle. With steep curves all along the way, the driver lost control over the vehicle.

Following the incident, the wedding that was scheduled to be solemnised on Monday in a grand manner was cancelled. The family members of the bride and the groom came together and conducted the marriage rituals in a low key affair.

District in-charge Minister M Krishnappa visited the family members of the deceased and consoled them. He said that the CM has decided to release Rs one lac as relief to the kin of the deceased and Rs 25,000 to the injured. He also said that the police will have to make sure that no goods carriers are used to ferry human beings henceforth.
