Mandya: The State Archaeological Department has planned to ban all kinds of film and serial shooting in Melukote in Mandya District which is identified as a famous pilgrimage.

The department’s move has come after a film shooting team allegedly hurt the religious sentiments of devotees and for polluting Kalyani (Temple pond). The Archaeological and Heritage Department and Mandya District Administration permitted the shooting of the Telugu film Bangara Raju -2, starring popular Telugu actor Naga Chaitanya. The shooting team took permission to shoot on Sunday November 14 and Monday November 15.

On Sunday, the film shooting team allegedly obstructed Cheluvanarayana Swamy Ashta Teertodhbava.

Speaking to NewsKarnataka, Ramaraj Aiyangar, a devotee who was present on Sunday said that the film shooting team members behaved rudely with devotees. “They had put restrictions on the movement of devotees. But the temple security remained mute spectators to the rudeness of the team.”

Few devotees complained to the Department of Archaeological, Museums and Heritage (DAMH), Mysuru. When contacted DAMH Commissioner B. R. Poornima said that soon after receiving the complaint she sent Department Engineer Suresh and Archaeologist N. L. Gowda for spot inspection.

They have submitted a report in this regard.

She said it is confirmed that the film team has polluted the Kalyani. She added that the team also destroyed the plants in the garden. She informed that she would serve notice to the film team and would confiscate the deposit remitted to the government. “We seriously are thinking on the lines of putting a ban on shooting in this historical place,” she added.

The Temple pond Kalyani was repaired recently by Infosys Pratishtana headed by Dr. Sudha Murthy. This is not the first time that the film teams have hurt the religious sentiments of the devotees. Earlier also various film teams while shooting have obstructed the movement of the devotees by putting up barricades. The carelessness of the shooting teams would prove to be damaging to historical monuments in the long run.

Melukote is the most important pilgrimage centre of the Mandya District and thousands of devotees gather during its annual car festival.
