Mysuru: Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) led by MCC Commissioner Dr. C.G. Betsurmath cleared two illegal parking lots, one near K.R. Circle and the other near Woodlands theatre as well as petty shops around the Palace in city on Friday morning.
The evictions of parking lots were undertaken after the Court rejected the appeal of the contractors who had sought continuation of these parking contract.
It is learnt that the term of the contract of the parking lots near K.R. Circle and Woodlands theatre had ended in 2003 and the contractors had approached the Court seeking continuation of the contract which the Court had rejected.
Despite the Court rejecting their appeal, the contractors were running these parking lots illegally, it is said.
Following the Court order, the MCC officials had served notices to clear the parking lot but the contractors had ignored the notice and were running their business illegally which forced MCC to evict them under Police security, Dr. Betsurmath said.
After clearing the parking lots, the MCC targeted petty shops around the Mysore Palace.
Petty shops selling fruits, flowers, footwear, shops of cobblers and cloth merchants who had set up shops on footpaths around the Palace were cleared despite resistance from the shopkeepers who alleged that the MCC had not given prior notice to them.
Devaraja and Lashkar Police provided security during the drive.
More than 15 gangmen, MCC’s Dhanush team, MCC Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Roopa, Zone-6 Assistant Commissioner Veena and others took part in the eviction drive.
