Mysore varsity exempts PhD fees for physically challenged

Mysuru: Here is good news for physically challenged students! University of Mysore during its academic council meeting decided to exempt fee for the physically challenged pursuing PhD at the varsity.

During the meeting at Crawford Hall here on Tuesday, the letter sent by Commissioner for Disabled K S Rajanna to the university seeking exemption of PhD fee for the physically challenged was discussed. During the meeting, some of the members suggested that they pay 50 percent fee on the lines of SC/ST candidates but the others including Kondarsaiah, principal of Maharanis Science College mentioned that in the state government bylaws there is a complete fee exemption for physically challenged students. Thus K S Rangappa decided to exempt fee for physically challenged. When the issue of “double the duration” of University of Mysore School of Planning and Architecture was taken up, Rangappa instructed the department to go ahead with Council of Architecture rules and regulation after a prolonged discussion.

During the meeting, council also agreed to introduce Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in Geography and Sericulture subjects. The syllabus for the proposed courses has been framed by the subject experts and EMMRC, Mysuru has developed the e content. Approval for Bharathi College of Education, Bharathinagar in Mandya to commence four years integrated programme comprising B Sc BEd and BA BEd courses from next academic year 2017-18 was also given on the occasion. Few days ago the committee had visited the college and was satisfied with the infrastructure and teaching staff.

The academic council also agreed to introduce five new gold medals, a cash prize and an endowment lecture in the name of Mysore University Computer Science Alumni Association (MNICSAA)-Prabhavathi Shankar Singh gold medal and endowment, Tumpudi Raghavendra Bhagavath gold medal and endowment, Rattehalli Vasudevamurthy gold medal, Rattehalli Saraswathi gold medal, Late N Srikantha memorial cash award and Prof D S Achuta Rao memorial national seminar in the history subject from this academic year.

Autonomous colleges should pay sport development fees: It came to light that autonomous colleges which come under purview of University of Mysore were not paying sports development fees. When this issue was taken up during the meeting and when the members mentioned that when these colleges utilize and make use of University of Mysore sports facilities and even take part in various competitions including representing University of Mysore they should pay sports development fees which they collect from their students. The college collects Rs 121 from each student as Sports Development Fees. From this money, University of Mysore takes up various sports activities.
