Mysuru: Summer, Zoo authorities make special arrangements for animals

Mysuru: The famous Mysore Zoo Authorities have made special arrangements to keep the zoo cool as Cultural City has recorded temperature of 32 degree celsius in the beginning of summer. The zoo one of the oldest and largest in the country houses more than 1500 animals including 624 mammals, 731 birds and 100 plus reptiles. Many animals are brought in from foreign countries. As mercury is rising up animals which are living under cool weather through out the year cannot sustain the heat in summer. In particular, the zoo authority has taken innovative measures to protect newborn cubs and new mothers.

No matter how sunny it is in the City, the temperature inside the zoo is 1 or 2 degrees Celsius lower than outside as iinside the zoo there is an environment such as thick forest, where the trees are growing large and everywhere there is greenery. Even so, the sun’s glare does not leave the animals unscathed.

Keeping in mind thw exposure of animals to sunstroke, the Zoo Authority is taking many measures including fountain system, and cooler system. Precautions have been taken so that the wildlife here should not be affected by the sun for any reason.

Speaking to mediapersons, Zoo Executive Director Ajith Kulkarni told, “we have been sprinkling water on animals twice a day to beat the heat, provided water ponds, providing ice to bears, provided coolers to Gorillas and Oragutans. We alsoare providing tender coconut, water melons in large numbers to animals to beat the heat. Precautions are taken to prevent dehydration in animals, he noted.

He said a large amount of Vitamins and Minerals are added externally in the daily feed of animals. Precautions have been taken to prevent health problems in animals during summer. He said that maintaining the health of the animals during summer is a challenging task, especially tiger, lion and giraffe have given birth. Thus, he said that more importance should be given to protection and care and nutrition of mothers and their young.
The mother of the new-born cubs are given a large amount of Vitamins and miznerals in their food. Coolers are being arranged for them, he said and added that this will also benefit the young ones. He said that all these arrangements will continue till the rainy season.

“When animals expose themselves to the scorching sun during summer, there are chances of health problems. Animals may languish. In this case, their food intake also decreases. Hence Veterinarians have suggested to give high priority to their food, water and protection, he added.
