Mysuru: An awareness campaign was held to mark World Schizophrenia Day 2022 at Kote Anjaneyaswamy Temple near the North Gate of Mysuru Palace in the City on Thursday June 2 which was inaugurated by District Legal Service Authority Member Secretary and Senior Civil Judge Devaraj Bhute.
The programme was held under the aegis of Mysuru District Administration, Zilla Panchayat and Office of the District Mental Health Executive Office.
Students from several City schools participated in the awareness programme. The Health Department officials were also present.
World Schizophrenia Day 2022 is observed on May 24 every year. Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally. Schizophrenia may result in some combination of hallucinations, delusions and extremely disordered thinking and behaviour that impairs daily functioning, and can be disabling. People with schizophrenia require lifelong treatment.
Schizophrenia affects approximately two crore people worldwide. The
annual number of new cases of the disorder is 1.5 per every 10,000 people. Approximately 5% of people with this disorder die by suicide, usually with a higher risk at the onset of mental illness. About 20%
of the people with schizophrenia attempt suicide at least once.
