Adoption to be dearer in Mysuru zoo

Mysuru: The 149th Governing Body Meeting of Karnataka Zoo Authority (KZA) has approved the increase of adoption fee for all kinds of animals.

The meeting was held on Wednesday December 15 at the Mysore Zoo, and was chaired by KZA Chairman L. R. Mahadeva Swamy. The KZA-hiked adoption cost would come into effect from January 1, 2022.

At present, the adoption cost of an elephant is Rs. 1.75 lakh per annum, which hiked to Rs. 3 lakh. Animal lovers can adopt for one day or one month or one year.

The KZA also has hiked the entry fees for a safari in Shimoga Zoo and Bannerghatta Zoo in Bengaluru. The meeting decided to upgrade department-owned Vanasri Restaurant in Bannerghatta in association with KSTDC and Bannerghatta Zoo. The meeting also decided to establish Forest Museum and Nature Museum in zoos.

Under the animal exchange programme, the Mysore Zoo has decided to bring 13 animals from all over the country. The Hampi Zoo has agreed to deliver two water horses from Bannerghatta. The KZA has requested Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai’s time for opening of the Belgaum Zoo. It was further decided to invite the Forest Minister and the District In-Charge Minister S. T. Somashekar to inaugurate the underpass of the Mysore Zoo.

The meeting approved contribution of Rs. 3.60 crore by Infosys Foundation to set up new gorilla house at Mysore Zoo, Rs. 99 lakh from RBI Currency Printers to construct house for Orangutans and thus have decided to spend Rs. 91 lakhs for construction of house for bears.

Chief Forest Conservation Officer (Wildlife) Vijayakumar Gogi, Forest and Environmental Biology Department General Secretary Sanjay, Authority Member Secretary B. P. Ravi, Authority Members Gokul Govardhan, Jyoti Rachanna and Directors of 9 zoos in the State participated in the meeting.

The Authority has received a total of Rs. 63.16 Crore revenue from 9 zoos in the State and other sources in 202 0– 21. The KZA has spent a total of Rs. 56.85 Crore. In addition, Rs. 31.43 crore has been used to build 343 houses to keep animals.
