Mysuru: Ennehole lake on the outskirts of Mysuru city is being polluted as authorities let waste water in to lake. Decades back the farmers surrounding the lake was growing paddy in 650 acres. But followed by waste water, the farmers are now growing vegetables, sugar cane and ginger.

The lake has an area of 176 acres and waste water from Bogadi, Vijayanagara, Saraswatipura, Kuvempu nagar, Gangotri layout, Sri ram pura, JP Nagara and Mahadevapura join Ennehole lake.  The lake water is being used by Dadada halli, Sindhuvalli, Kalalavadi, Udbhur, villages. But owing to lack of co-ordination by Sri rampura, Udbhur and Sinduvalli gram panchayats, the lake is filled with silt and unable to be used for cattles also. Villagers says that more than 60 acres of lake land was encroached by land sharks.

A waste water purifying unit was established in Ryanakere, but villagers says that the unit does not purify the waste water efficiently. The water joins Ennehole lake and then joins Kapila river. A villager Basappa said that the waste water is passing through the middle of Dadadahalli and then joining to lake. The villagers are facing problems like mosquito menace, stink and epidemic diseases.

Mysuru city corporation (MCC) assistant engineer Dhanush told that a waste water management unit was established in Rayanakere with capacity of 6 crore litres. The water is being purified in two stages before letting it to the lake. He denied waste water is being let out.

Jayapura revenue office deputy tahsildar Manjunath said that the lake land has three survey numbers. “We have information of encroachment, which will be evicted after the survey,” he said Sindhuvalli Gram Panchayat Panchayat development officer Ravi kumar said that earlier the lake was used for fishery. But due to polluted water coming to the lake, fishery activity was stopped.

Villagers urged to remove the silt, grass and bushes from lake and construct a park beside it.
