Illiterate prisoners in Mysuru jail to start learning under State Govt’s new initiative

Mysuru: The State Government programme, Kalikeyinda Badalavane (change through learning) was launched in Mysuru Central Prison on November 1.

The programme aims to educate illiterate prisoners in jail by teaching them from first standard to degree level. The State Prisons and Correctional Services Department in association with Loka Shikshana Directorate launched this unique programme throughout the State.

The Mysuru Central Prison officers started the programme through providing education for 36 women and 407 men illiterate prisons on November 1.

The teachers are not coming from outside. The literate prisoners were engaged with the work by bifurcating them as literate and partially literate prisons. The Central Prison has 226 partially literate prisons. The literate prisons were given training to teach illiterates by Loka Shikshana officials. Every day, illiterate prisons were given teaching of two hours with study materials provided by Loka Shikshana Directorate.

The text book named Balige belaku contains 24 lessons which provides knowledge of reading, writing, simple Mathematics with general knowledge. Speaking to NewsKarnataka, Prison Superintendent K. C. Divyashri told that the prisoners will be given examination next March. Those who pass in the exams will be allowed to appear for SSLC examinations conducted by National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), degree, even post-graduation degree examination conducted by Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and Karnataka State Open University (KSOU).

She said that through education, the government plans to convert minds of criminals so that the prisoners would be reformed while serving imprisonment.

District Adult Education Officer K. H. Chandrashekar told that 40 literate prisoners have been trained already. Each teacher will teach a group of ten prisoners.
