Mysuru: After various educational institutions in the city, including JSS educational institution, announced admission to Ukrainian students who had to discontinue education to the ongoing war, the famous Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens has come forward to host an Indian origin doctor’s pet animal in the zoo.

Dr. Giri Kumar Patil, a native of Tankara in Telangana’s Mehbubnagar District, has been practising medicine in Ukraine for decades. In his two-storey building in Ukraine, he kept a Jaguar, a black panther, and three Italian Mastiff dogs. Despite the Russian attack, he refused to leave his residence because of the animals. After seeing his Indian passport, the Russian soldiers arrested him and released him with a warning. Now, he wants to come back to his native with his pets.

He sought 50 acres of land from the Telangana government to raise his pets. According to the wildlife act, rearing wild animals is not permitted in the country, so his request was denied.

The Telangana Government, on the other hand, promised him that he would be able to leave Jaguar, black panther and mastiffs at any Zoo.

The authorities at the Mysuru Zoo agreed to take care of the doctor’s pets. B P. Ravi, Member Secretary of the Karnataka Zoo Authority said, “The Mysuru Zoo has facilities, a good climate, and an environment for the doctor’s pets. There are caretakers and veterinary doctors at the zoo. We will look after the animals if the government allows it.”

With over 157 acres of spacious area, the Mysuru Zoo is Asia’s oldest zoo. 1450 animals from 25 nations are housed at the zoo. Thousands of tourists visit the zoo every day to see its rare collection of animals. There is already one Jaguar in the Zoo.

The matter is currently before the Union Government. The Mysuru Zoo is ready to welcome new Ukrainian guests as soon as the government permits.
