People-friendly reception desk at police stn changing visitors perceptions

Mysuru: The reception desks set up at most of the police stations across the city with the intention of being people-friendly has proved to be handy for the visitors, who earlier were apprehensive about visiting police stations.

Due to the soft approach of the police personnel who are working at reception desk most of the earlier issues such as people not being able to give accurate details due to nervousness, or getting scared due to the tone of police personnel have become things of past. Presently the people-friendly desk gives one a feel of speaking to receptionist at a star or reputed hotel.

The innovative idea of having a reception desk, aimed at comforting the distressed persons seeking help from police struck Mysuru Police commissioner A Subrahmanyeswara Rao after allegations of visitors not being treated politely at police stations surfaced. The Commissioner thus decided to set up a comprehensive reception desk, the first point of contact for any visitors at police stations across the city with the intention of treating them in a polite and disciplined manner besides guiding them on whom to approach and what exactly they are required to do. The desk personnel have been given special training and report directly to the commissioner’s office.

Inorder to know the ground reality at the police stations presently our reporters visited a few stations in Mysuru, including Lakshmipuram Police station. During the visit, the police personnel referred the reporters to reception desk where they met receptionist Punyashree (woman police constable) who asked them to be seated and later inquired about the complaint in a soft and patient manner. Her approach was so soft that the reporters were left confused if they were in police station or at some other place. After listening to their complaint the receptionist guided them to to ASI Gowrishankar who too very calmly registered the complaint. In conclusion, the reporters opined that the reception desk is really doing well in helping the visitors to lodge any complaint without any hassles. Earlier, most people would forget what they had to say out of fear on entering the police station.

Speaking to Newskarnataka, Subrahmanyeswara Rao, said, “It’s really nice that our efforts is getting good results. The purpose of coming out with reception desk was to make the visitors feel more comfortable and free. There should no scope for any manipulation. In days to come we will further improve the system.”
