Mysuru: The Mysuru district administration in association with Mysuru District and Town Freedom Fighters’ Association organised a rally to commemorate the Mysuru Chalo movement here on Wednesday.

District in-Charge Minister H C Mahadevappa flagged off the rally at Freedom Fighters Park which passed by the major thoroughfares of the city including Chamaraja Double Road, Ramaswamy Circle, Sanskrit Pathashala Circle and Sayyaji Rao Road before culminating at the starting point. Mahadevappa along with veteran freedom fighter Doreswamy unfurled the National Flag and offered floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi’s bust at the park.

Speaking on the occasion Mahadevappa said, “Mysore Chalo Chaluvali was aimed at bringing a democratic government in the then princely state of Mysore. The then ruler of Mysuru on October 24, 1947 announced his decision to hand over the power to a democratically- elected government. With the massive protest made in the name of Mysuru Chalo, the king announced the establishment of a new democratic government. I have received the memorandum from freedom fighters demanding hike in their pension and have also urged the government to grant health benefits as well. As of now we are giving Rs 5000 as pension to freedom fighters across the state. After bringing their needs to the notice of the chief minister we will try to look into their demands”.

Senior freedom fighter Doreswamy said, “Even after completion of seventy years of independence, the problems of the poor and farmers are not addressed in India. The central and state governments have initiated various schemes for the welfare of the people but it is not reaching the deserving people”.

Mayor B L Bhyrappa, Deputy Commissioner Randeep, MLA Somashekhar, Zilla Panchayat President Nayeema Sultana, Freedom fighters Krishnamurty and Shivanna were also present.
