Rangayana to celebrate its 25th anniversary from Aug 12

Mysuru: Rangayan, theatre institute is all set to celebrate its silver jubilee here, on August 12. The events will extend over a period of five days, it was informed during a press meet by the director of the institute, Janardhan.

The programme will be inaugurated by Minister for Kannada and Culture Umashree and Chief Minister Siddaramiah. Popular actor Prakash Rai is also expected to attend the programme.

“The vision that began with BV Karanth has grown about tenfold”, says Rangayana Director Janardhan. He also spoke of asking the Government to give the theatre school more land to handle the growth of the school. Janardhan requests the government to not give them land far away from the city.

The school has requested for land either near the DC office or anywhere inside the University of Mysore campus. They also need this land to build a museum in memory of BV Karanth, who had a vast collection of books, tapes which are currently not being used by students of theatre.

“We’ve requested the Chief Minister for land and we hope he will grant our request,” says Janardhan, “It will let us continue the work of BV Karanth and work for the betterment of theatre and society.”

Apart from staging plays during the festivities, there will be street plays performed from 4pm at Rangayana. Folk performances will be staged at Vanaranga from 5pm.

Assistant Director SI Bhavikatti, Rangyana’s Mime Ramesh, Vinayak Bhatt and DD of Department of Public relations and information AV Prakash were present at the press meet.

This year Rangayana has decided to give the BV Karanth award, the first year it has been constituted, to theatre activist and Karanth’s peer V Ramamurthy. The award includes a Rs. 3 Lakhs cash prize along with a specially designed momento.

The agenda of the programme during the week is as follows:

12th August-Samaskara
13th August- Check mate
14th August- Chirebandivaade
15th August -Pugalendi Prahasana
16th August – Samaskara
