Mysuru: Going by ground reality it seems, the tobacco ban at University of Mysore Manasa Gangotri is just on paper. As part of its green campus initiative, KS Rangappa, Vice Chancellor, University of Mysore banned tobacco at University of Mysore Manasa Gangotri campus from November 9, 2014, but students are still seen smoking at round canteen premises itself.

The university banned the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products on the campus. Many shops on Manasa Gangotri campus were selling cigarettes and tobacco products, but once notices were served to these shops and shopkeepers warned of stringent action if they were found selling tobacco products, most of the shops stopped selling tobacco related items including cigarettes. The university also sent circulars to all the departments directing students not to consume tobacco products warning them of penalisation if they were found using tobacco products on campus.

Though most of the shops have stopped selling tobacco, still the students and outsiders including students from neighboring colleges somehow get cigarettes and are found smoking at the famous round canteen and various places at Manasa Gangotri campus. The university planned to fine students when they were caught for the first time. If a student was caught more than thrice, he would not be allowed to write the post graduate exams. But it seems, the authorities concerned failed to implement the said rule effectively giving scope for students to flout the rules.

When this was brought to the notice of Rangaswamy, Administrative Officer, University of Mysore, he said, “Initially it was under control. We thought tobacco including smoking is banned in round canteen and its premise. Strictly we had told the canteen people to not to encourage cigarettes. Circular copies with regarding ban of smoking were also read in all the classes. It’s really a nuisance. If each department imposes the rule strictly, definitely such violation can be avoided. With regarding foreign students, I will speak to Hemanth Kumar, Director, International students, to instruct foreign students not to smoke in the university premises. Definitely from Monday, we will take stringent action against those found smoking at Manasa Gangotri premises. I start taking up the drive and if possible try to install CCTV cameras at round canteen and other prominent places”.
