Mysuru: It was merely few days ago that Superintendent of Police Ravi D Chennannavar brought in steps to ensure that men in Khaki are approachable and accessible to all. In a surprising development, this people-friendly policing concept of the SP has helped the police department crack a mysterious child sale racket that was thriving in Mysuru. The shocking fact is that a contract worker in KR Hospital is the kingpin of the six-member racket, which also includes two nurses and a social worker.
All the six members have been nabbed by the police, thanks to a responsible citizen who gave the details of the racket to the SP over the phone. Following the details, Mandi police started the probe and traced the dots to the contract worker of K R Hospital and then nabbed a nurse who was running a quackery in Mandi Mohalla. This lady nurse is a vital link in the racket as it is on her contact with the doctors in almost all hospitals in Mysuru that the racket was depending on.
The racket has been targeting poor families and those who have conceived outside marriage to run the business. The gullible and helpless mothers were lured with money. The racket had sold 18 babies so far and four have been sold to couples living abroad.
How did it happen?
A three and half year old boy named Prashanth was kidnapped from Nanjangudu temple premises on April 21. He was the son of a beggar named Parvathi. The Nanjangud police who registered a case did not work on it at all, but the locals were sure that there was a different aspect attached to the same kidnapping.
A citizen recently contacted the SP after the SP put out phone numbers of all the police heads of the district as part of friendly policing initiative. Over this call the responsible citizen gave out all the details to the SP about the possible child sales racket functioning in the district.
Soon the SP handed over the case to Additional SP Kala Krishnamurthy and ASP Divya Sara Thomas. The dedication of the district police has unearthed a precarious racket that thrives on sale of innocent children.
