Mysuru: The number of sports-related injuries has gone up in Mysuru with hospitals getting cases daily. Earlier, one or two sports injuries were reported once in 10 or 15 days, but now, one sports-related injury is being reported almost every day, said Dr. Girishchandra, Consultant Orthopaedician, Columbia Asia Hospital. Dr. Girishchandra performs nearly 120 surgeries every month on an average, of which 60 percent are for sports-related injuries.

“Due to awareness about the importance of sports, in recent years, the number of people taking it up has increased enormously. At the same time, the number of sports-related injuries too have gone up. But those getting into sports are failing to follow certain dos and don’ts due to which they are suffering from various injuries. Due to improper and unscientific training, the common injuries faced by sports persons include are related to the ankle, groin, hamstring strain, shin plates, knee injury in joints, elbow injury. Those playing Tennis get foot injuries especially, golf-ligament injuries, knee and shoulder dislocation”, added Dr. Girishchandra who has treated many national and international level sports persons in various sporting events including Basketball, Volleyball and Athletics at the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports Hostels. Many sports persons from the University of Mysore also visit Girishchandra for sports-related injuries. He also mentioned that sports persons are not only suffering from injuries due to unscientific training but also due to bad training equipment and proper warm up before they take up their respective sporting events,

“Most of the time injuries are caused due to sudden stretch or by immediate action in the exercise or in sporting activities. And moreover the injuries occur due to too much pressure and over-workout”, added Dr. Girishchandra.

P Krishnaiah, Director (In-charge), Department of Physical Education, University of Mysore, said, “There are many reasons for sports-related injuries. Many times when the sports persons try to perform more than their strength they get injured. The sports persons should know their strength and based on that they should workout and practise. Apart from this, many of them want result at a very short notice. The performances should be increased in a phased manner but many of the sports persons are not following it and want the result in very short duration due to which they suffer from various injuries. Many a times, our sports persons have suffered injuries during practice. We are creating awareness in this regard and I hope, in days to come, such injuries come down. During our summer camps also we create awareness in this regard.”
