Mysuru: Worried about frequent power failures? Finding it difficult to prepare food with a mixer grinder in its absence? Want to exercise while you cook? If your answer is ‘yes’, then this device is for you!

In simple terms, this device is basically a mixer grinder, mounted on a cycle. Gone are the days when you needed to rely on there being power to use your mixer grinder. All you need to do is get on the cycle and pedal away till your masala or chutney is ground to the right consistency.

During the ongoing National Convention on Quality Concepts (NCQC), organised by the Quality Circle Forum of India (QCFI) Mysuru chapter, in association with the JSS Science and Technology University at SJCE campus, at Kaizenexhibition, the bicycle mixer is the one drawing all of the attention.

Sudheer, an employee of TVS in Mysuru, after seeing the power issues in village, came up with this device as a rather creative solution. All it requires is an investment of Rs 500, and you can get this device fitted onto your bicycle. It works along the same lines as the mechanism involved in cycle dynamo. It has got a double benefit of saving power and getting some indirect exercise done.

Speaking to Newskarnataka Sudheer said, “After seeing the functioning of a dynamo, I thought of this device. If we pedal once, we will see 20 rotations in the mixer grinder, which is faster than the traditional mixer grinders that operate on electricity. For the device to work, apart from the cycle it requires bearing, drive and a mixer. I can make this for anyone with just three hours and an investment of Rs 500.” He added that one could make chutney in just ten minutes of cycling.

Shylaja, Sudheer’s wife and a teacher, said, “At first I did not expect it to have that much of an impact, but only after I saw the reactions of other people and some of the officers in TVS, after it was put on display, I realised its importance. I feel like this device will be very useful in places where there are frequent power cuts.”

Prashanth Kumar Naik, SAIL, from Orissa, after seeing the functioning and benefits of the device, was impressed with the invention. “It’s really one top displays here. It has got two benefits, exercise and power saving,” he said.

There were other products at the National Convention on Quality Concepts including a cleaning solution made from orange peels. Devi, wife of Arvind Karthick an employee of TVS, has made a cleaning solution using the skin of two oranges, two spoons of baking soda, and a litre of warm water. The solution is viable for three days and can also be used to remove hard water stains.

Students from Oxford Public School presented a talk on ‘Unhealthy Competition Among School Students”. The three students, Naman Maheswari, Aman Ahuja and Taneja from Gwalior stated that the method of mugging and scoring marks doesn’t serve any purpose in the long run, but only puts students in a lot of trouble and difficulties. “Most of the students don’t care about understanding; they just want to score better than their colleagues. They don’t try to understand the subjects instead they just mug up and score marks which will have lot of problem when they go for higher studies and finally into the real world,” they said.
