Three-day special lecture series kick starts in Mysuru

Mysuru: Mysuru is an ideal avenue for Sanskrit and heritage related studies, thanks to a wonderful resource-the Oriental Research Institute (ORI), lauded JP Fillionzat, Professor of Sanskrit (Emeritus) from Sorbonne University, Paris, France.
Delivering the key note address at a three-day special lecture series organised by Oriental Research Institute at the National Centre for History of Science auditorium here on Tuesday he said, “If we aregetting the references for heritage from the ancient manuscripts it is imperativethat we pay homage to thosewho have contributed it. Luckily, we have the manuscripts and should make use of it. It’s a treasure that is open to all the scholars”.

Fillionzat, who is also taking up a research on Hampi Temple added, “We should be able to differentiate between Shaiva and Vaishnava for the unique ideologies they convey. However, Hampi is a pilgrimage and open to all withoit any discrimination. At Hampi temple, one can come across 500 different monuments”.

KS Rangappa, Vice Chancellor, University of Mysore who also spoke on the occasion said “ORI of Mysuru is a gold mine of knowledge for scholars, researchers and students of Sanskrit language of India and abroad. The institute which was founded in 1891 is promoting ancient knowledge scripted in Sanskrit language and publishing the famous works of Sanskrit literature written on palm leaves. So far 30,000 bundles of palm leaves and paper manuscripts containing 60,000 Sanskrit works have been collected and preserved in the institute. The institute is well equipped with 50,000 precious Sanskrit literatures. In the last 125 years, the institute has published 206 scholarly works”.

The special lecture series will cover the topics,“Influence of Sanskrit Language on Inscription and Numismatics” by MN Nanjundaswamy, “Concept of Sthitaprajna in Bhagavadgita and its Relevance for Today” by Michael, “Baudha Dharma Dharshana’ by Sharathchandra Swamy and “The Role of Elephants in Ancient Indian Policy” by HP Devaki. The event will conclude on October 27.
