Mysuru: Environmentalists undertook a unique protest in the City’s Yadavagiri layout on Monday December 27. The tree lovers alleged that four trees were cut overnight in front of a hospital on Vivekananda Road near Yadavagiri Tarasu circle. The Gulmohar tree located in front of the hospital has been providing clean air, shade and shelter to hospital patients and citizens for the last 40 years. Protestors were outraged that the trees were cut down overnight. The environmentalists performed final rites for the trees through a priest.
Also, offering floral tributes to the tree, tree lovers said you gave oxygen to lakhs of people, gave shelter to hundreds of birds and
insect pests. However, we lost you today, and it’s painful. The tree lovers took pledge that they would prevent cutting of trees anywhere in the City in future.
Tree lovers came down heavily on Forest Department and MCC officers for allowing felling of trees. They said, “according to Tree Protection Act, the Forest Officer can impose fine up to Rs. 50000 for cutting tree without permission. They urged the Forest authorities to impose fine thrice the actual, and initiate legal action. Further, they requested the authorities to take steps to prevent cutting of trees in City in future.
