Mysuru: The case of the lockup-death which was reported from Ratnapuri in Hunsoor has created an uproar in the city as villagers, alleging foul play of the police behind the mysterious death of a man, staged a protest in Ratnapuri, on October 30.

The police arrested a person after issuing a non-bailable warrant and when the accused resisted, the police arrested him using additional force and then allegedly beat him to death in the lock-up.

It is said that when the police approached the accused, he reportedly assaulted them and also set a constable’s bike on fire. His mother too gave police a hard time. The mother-son duo was then arrested and put behind the bars.

While the mother was produced before the court, the son, who fell unwell after fight with the police, was not to be seen. Later, the truth of his death in the lock-up came to light. The sudden death of the man in the lock-up has led to suspicion that he might have been killed by the police.

The deceased is identified as Devaraj alias Suresh. He was 36. The case is now being investigated by a team led by the Mysuru SP.
