Jupiter’s Spectacular Opposition to Shine on December 7

Every 13 months, the giant planet Jupiter makes its closest approach to Earth, offering a mesmerizing sight in the night sky. This December, the celestial event reaches its peak with Jupiter’s opposition on December 7.

During this rare alignment, Jupiter and the Sun will be on opposite sides of Earth, causing the planet to rise in the east as the Sun sets in the west. This alignment makes Jupiter appear larger and brighter, visible all night long. At its closest approach, Jupiter will be just 610 million kilometers away from Earth, compared to its usual distance of 780 million kilometers from the Sun.

Skywatchers with telescopes or binoculars will enjoy an even more spectacular view of the gas giant.

Additionally, the yellow-hued Rohini star, located about 65 light-years from the Sun, will be visible near Jupiter, enhancing the beauty of the night sky.

Dr. A.P. Bhat from Udupi encourages everyone to take advantage of this rare opportunity and witness the grandeur of Jupiter’s opposition.
